Ampelmann

Offshore access as easy as crossing the street

Offshore wind farm Egmond aan Zee

While most Dutchmen did prepare for frosty weather December 2007, the Ampelmann set sail on the anchor handling tug Smit Bronco to the Offshore Wind Farm Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ). On Tuesday 11 December, the Ampelmann sailed out from the port of Harlingen to the test location. With over 2m significant wave height, the Ampelmann did face its first serious tests; demonstrating to be offshore-proof by resisting high waves washing over the deck of the vessel and challenging its sea-fastening with roll-motions over 11 degrees. On Thursday the 13th of December and Friday the 14th, the waves decreased to 0.5 significant wave height. These days were a perfect start to test various operational procedures with the proper functioning of all systems. Subsequent, on Friday morning 12am, the first man ever transferred from the Ampelmann to wind turbine nr.3 of the Offshore Wind Farm Egmond aan Zee.
