Vessel Polarbjorn equipped with Ampelmann
In November 2009, the Ampelmann A-01 unit was installed on "Polarbjorn" which was deployed as an accommodation support vessel (ASV) for a significant work campaign involving two wells workovers and major maintenance of production facilities on Origin Energy's Yolla offshore platform in Bass Strait, between the mainland Australia and its island state of Tasmania.
Offshore operation in the Bass Strait
The project took a total of 4.5 months to complete and involved some 8,000 personnel transfers across the Ampelmann, between the ASV and Yolla platform. Given the specific design of the Yolla platform with no spider deck or intermediate platform, a custom built stair-tower with multi-directional landing zone was installed on the NE corner of the platform, coming down from the cellar deck. The Ampelmann system installed on Polarbjorn successfully operated in sea states that were comparible to the Northern North Sea in winter time.
This very successful performance in Bass Strait has further confirmed the combination of Ampelmann system and Polarbjorn to be a very attractive solution for these type of projects. The Polarbjorn, with an LOA of 92m, DP2 capabilities, over 70 client beds and now installed with an Ampelmann system, is offering her services all over the world. After the completing the work in Bass Strait, the Polarbjorn-Ampelmann departed Australian waters and sailed out to the Caribbean to be deployed for a platform and pipeline commissioning job there.</p>
